Slip-Sliding Away: Glaciers in a Warming World
Past glaciers sculpted landscapes of the Midwest and Earth's most spectacular mountains. Modern ice sheets provide our best archives of past climate change. Now as Earth's climate warms, glaciers are responding rapidly and in unpredictable ways, with profound effects on sea level and water resources. This talk will discuss connections between glaciers and climate with special emphasis on research beneath Norway's Svartisen Ice Cap, where a unique laboratory allows scientists to live beneath a thick, sliding glacier and study how it moves and erodes the landscape.
