The
main objectives of the Modern Languages
are to: equip the student with a working knowledge of
the language for communication and research in such
areas as business, music, travel, personal enrichment,
and social activities; acquaint the student with the
literature and civilization of the language; prepare
the student to teach language and culture; and prepare
the student for graduate work in a chosen field.
A student majoring in a second language will acquire
the ability to communicate reasonably well in speaking
and writing, in reading materials of a general nature,
and understanding the language spoken by a native. The
student will become knowledgeable about the landmarks
in literature and civilization and the history and achievements
of that civilization and will develop an appreciation,
understanding and tolerance of the richness and variety
of a second culture. Exposure to a second language and
culture will help any individual planning to live and
work in a bilingual culture or environment.
Majors
include: Spanish (B.A.) and Spanish Teaching (B.A.).
