Morningside College announces new faculty members

Morningside College recently announced nine new faculty members and one faculty member in a new position.

The new faculty members are Patrick Blaine, assistant professor of modern languages; Aaron Bunker, assistant professor of biology and chemistry; David Elder, assistant professor of writing and rhetoric; David Lambert, assistant professor of music; Jason Murray, visiting instructor of English; Michael Rohlena, visiting assistant professor of theatre; Jeremy Schnieder, assistant professor of writing and rhetoric; Kurt Spearing, assistant professor of biology and chemistry; and J. Jeffrey Zink, assistant professor of business administration and economics.

Jill Wilson is in a new position as assistant professor of music.

Blaine comes to Morningside after serving seven years as a predoctoral lecturer in Spanish, film studies, comparative literature and interdisciplinary studies at the University of Washington. He also worked for three years as a graduate staff associate in the school’s language learning center and as assistant director of the Spanish language program. He previously taught and studied in Santiago, Chile, and studied in San Sebastián, Spain. Blaine has a doctorate in comparative literature from the University of Washington.

Bunker comes to Morningside after serving as a teaching assistant at the University of Missouri in Columbia. He also has experience as a tutor, lab assistant and guest lecturer. Bunker has a doctorate in biomedical sciences with a minor in college teaching from the University of Missouri.

Elder joins the faculty after serving as a teaching assistant, writing assessment designer and managing editor at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. While there, he was the runner-up for the Graduate Instructor of the Year award. Elder is a doctoral candidate in rhetoric and composition at Texas Christian University.

Lambert comes to Morningside after serving three years as director of jazz studies/low brass at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. He has a total of 12 years of teaching experience, and, among other things, has performed in Broadway productions, with a Guadalajara salsa band and with several jazz ensembles. Lambert has a doctorate in jazz performance from the University of Miami.

Murray joins the faculty after serving five years as a teaching assistant at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. He has a total of 14 years of teaching experience. He also is a published author of poetry and short fiction. Murray is a doctoral candidate in English at the University of South Dakota.

Rohlena comes to Morningside after serving as an adjunct faculty member at Wayne State College in Nebraska. He previously served as an adjunct faculty member at three other schools, including Morningside College. He currently is the director of visual design at LAMB Productions Theatre in Sioux City. Rohlena has a Master of Fine Arts in design/theatre technology with an emphasis in scenic design from the University of South Dakota.

Schnieder joins the faculty after having recently served as a teaching assistant, placement essay evaluator and assistant to the director of the general studies writing program at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. He previously was an instructor, writing center director and writing assessment coordinator at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Schnieder has a doctorate in rhetoric and writing from Bowling Green State University.

Spearing comes to Morningside after serving on the faculty at Concordia University in St. Paul, Minn., and at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. He has over 10 years of teaching experience at various schools. Spearing is a doctoral candidate in biological sciences at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

Zink comes to Morningside after serving three years as a visiting assistant professor of economics at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. In all, he has over 15 years of teaching experience with various schools. Zink has a doctorate in economics from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

Wilson is in a new position as assistant professor of music after serving two years as a visiting instructor of music education at Morningside College. She previously was an adjunct faculty member at Morningside and the director of the Leo Kucinski Academy of Music. Wilson has experience teaching music at all levels. She has a doctorate in music education from Boston University in Massachusetts.
