Mustangs Win Sixth Straight Dual

Morningside pinned Hastings College 43-9 in a GPAC wrestling dual on Friday night in the HPER Center.

The Mustangs won their sixth dual in a row to climb to 8-6 on the season, including a perfect 5-0 mark in the GPAC.

The Broncos forfeited three weight classes and the Mustangs won five of the seven other bouts, including two by fall.

Mustangs Compete At Minnesota Challenge

Morningside finished 11th in the men’s 200-yard freestyle relay for its top showing during Friday night’s action at the Minnesota Challenge swimming & diving meet in Minneapolis hosted by the University of Minnesota.


The Mustangs’ quartet of Cole Malin, Kieran Sweeney, Travis Schombert, and Taylor McCloskey combined for a time of 1:29.18.


Malin had the Mustangs’ top finish in an individual event with a 29th place showing with a time of 22.13 seconds in the men’s 50-yard freestyle.


The Minnesota Challenge will conclude on Saturday.

Mustangs Place Three On Academic All-District Teams

Morningside College’s Garth Hamilton, Danny Rudeen, and Brittany Alfredson have been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District 5 College Division Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).


The three players will be placed on the national ballot for the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Teams.


Hamilton, a 6-7 senior center from Lincoln, Neb., has a 3.69 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with a major in psychology counseling. He is averaging 12.2 points per game and is the Mustangs’ leading rebounder with a norm of 7.0 caroms per game.


Rudeen, a 6-3 sophomore guard from Sioux City, has a 3.85 cumulative GPA with a major in computer science. He is the Mustangs’ leading scorer with an average of 15.1 points per game to compliment an average of 4.4 rebounds per game.


Alfredson, a 5-11 senior guard from Moville, Iowa, has a 3.66 cumulative GPA with a major in elementary education. She is the Mustangs’ second leading scorer and top rebounder with averages of 9.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per contest.


Athletes must be of at least sophomore academic status, be a starter or significant reserve, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher to be eligible for Capital One Academic honors.

 

Mustangs Win On The Road At Dakota Wesleyan

Morningside pulled away over the last nine minutes of the game en route to an 81-59 GPAC men’s basketball triumph against Dakota Wesleyan University on Wednesday in Mitchell, S.D.

The Mustangs outscored the Tigers 26-10 down the stretch to break open a tight contest where the guests led by six points, 55-49, with 9:09 left to play.

The Morningside triumph avenged a 78-72 home court loss it had suffered against the same Dakota Wesleyan team earlier in the season on Dec. 7.

Mustang Women Win Fifth Straight

Fifth-ranked Morningside stretched its winning streak to five games with a 68-58 women’s basketball victory against Dakota Wesleyan University on Wednesday in Mitchell, S.D.

The win raised the Mustangs’ record to 19-6 overall and 13-3 in the GPAC to stay one-half game off the pace of league leader Concordia University.

The Mustangs pressured Dakota Wesleyan into a dismal 33.9 percent shooting performance and outrebounded their hosts by a slight 38-37 margin.

Chelsie Trask poured in a game and season’s high 27 points for the Mustangs. Trask, who finished two points shy of her career high, made nine of 16 field goal attempts, including five of eight shots from beyond the 3-point arc, and converted four of five free throw attempts.

Mustangs Go 2-0 In Home Triangular

Morningside went 2-0 in Wednesday’s home wrestling triangular with a 26-12 triumph over GPAC rival Northwestern College and a 35-13 non-conference win against Buena Vista University.

The victories pushed the Mustangs’ record over the .500 mark at 7-6 and kept them undefeated in the GPAC at 4-0.

The Mustangs trailed 9-3 against the Red Raiders through the first four weight divisions, but captured five of the last six bouts, including two by major decision and two by fall.

Brian Block and John Sievert were the Mustangs’ pin winners. Block, ranked No. 1 in the nation at 184 lbs., took care of business in 2:01 against Tim Stephens, while Sievert needed just 2:05 to dispose of the Red Raiders’ Josiah Beers in the heavyweight finale. The pin by Sievert was his school-record 19th fall of the season and raised his season’s record to 31-7.

Mustangs Announce Men's Basketball Recruit

Alex Kurtenbach, a 6-5 forward from Columbus, Neb., will enroll at Morningside College next fall and compete for the Mustangs’ men’s basketball team announced Morningside head coach Jim Sykes.


Kurtenbach is a senior at Columbus High School, where he is averaging 10.7 points and a team-high 5.3 rebounds per game this season. He leads the team with 24 assists and 11 blocked shots and ranks second on the team with 24 steals. Kurtenbach has made 61 of 127 field goal attempts to lead the team in field goal accuracy at 48.0 percent.


He earned honorable mention Class A all-state honors from the Omaha World-Herald and the Lincoln Journal-Star in addition to first-team All-Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference honors as a junior. Kurtenbach led Columbus in scoring and rebounding last season with averages of 9.9 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. He also led the team in field goal accuracy with 87 field goals in 184 attempts for 47.3 percent. Kurtenbach made 64 of 92 free throw attempts for 69.6 percent and ranked third on the team with 20 assists and third with 22 steals.


Kurtenbach will join a Morningside program that has made three NAIA Division II National Tournament appearances in the last six years.

 

Mustangs Ranked Fifth In The Nation

Morningside College is ranked fifth nationally in the latest NAIA Division II women’s basketball poll released on Jan. 30.


The Mustangs defeated Dordt College 81-66 and Midland University 102-52 last week to move up two spots after they had been ranked seventh in last week’s poll. Morningside has an 18-6 record and is second in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) standings with a 12-3 league mark.


Morningside is one of five teams from the GPAC in this week’s NAIA II Top 25. Concordia University is third, Northwestern College is seventh, Briar Cliff University is 10th, and Hastings College is 20th.


The Mustangs will take a four-game winning streak into a game against Dakota Wesleyan University on Wednesday in Mitchell, S.D.

Mustangs Win Seven Events At Buena Vista Meet

Morningside athletes won seven events at Saturday’s Buena Vista University Dennis Young Classic indoor track & field meet in Storm Lake, Iowa.


John Harris and Monte Larsen were each involved in three victories. Harris, a junior from Holstein, Iowa, won the men’s 600-meter run with a time of 1:21.62, while Larsen, a senior from Neola, Iowa, reigned in the men’s 400-meters with a time of 49.29 seconds. Both also ran legs for the Mustangs’ winning 1600-meter and 3200-meter relay teams.

Mustangs Ranked 11th In NAIA Poll; Sievert And Block Ranked No. 1

Morningside College is ranked No. 11 in the nation as a team and the Mustangs’ Joe Sievert and Brian Block continue to be ranked No. 1 in their weight classes in the latest NAIA wrestling poll released on Jan. 25.

The Mustangs, who were ranked ninth in the previous poll, are the defending Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) and NAIA North Region champions.

Morningside is one of five teams from the GPAC ranked in the NAIA Top 20. Midland University is ranked eighth, Concordia University is 13th, and Dakota Wesleyan University is 16th.


Sievert, a junior from Akron, Iowa, is ranked No. 1 at 174 lbs., while Block, a junior from Sibley, Iowa, is the nation’s No. 1-ranked competitor at 184 lbs. Sievert is undefeated with a 18-0 record with four falls, while Block has a 13-2 record with five falls.

Morningside’s Jared Wildeboer, a senior from Parkersburg, Iowa, is ranked 12th at 165 lbs. Wildeboer has a 10-12 record with two falls.

Morningside will take a 4-6 dual record into a GPAC dual against Midland on Friday in Fremont, Neb.
