Morningside head football coach Steve Ryan has announced the names of 32 high school recruits who will join the Mustangs for the 2011 season.
The recruits are:
Jake Allen, a 5-9, 165 lb. running back from Council Bluffs, Iowa. Allen is a senior at Treynor High School, where he earned first-team Class 1A all-state honors from the Iowa Newspaper Association (INA) and second-team Des Moines Register all-state laurels as a defensive back. Allen ranked among Iowa’s prep leaders with eight interceptions to go along with 50 tackles. Offensively he rushed for 1,355 yards and 17 touchdowns in 181 attempts for an average of 7.5 yards per carry and caught 12 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns for an average of 18.9 yards per catch. Allen had 14 punt returns for 231 yards and a touchdown for an average of 16.5 yards per return.
Blake Anderson, a 6-0, 275 lb. offensive lineman from Chino, Calif. Anderson is a senior at Don Lugo High School, where he made the 2010 All-Inland Empire Team and was a two-time All-Mt. Baldy League performer.
Tanner Anderson, a 5-10, 170 lb. defensive back-kicker from Fremont, Neb. Anderson is a senior at Fremont Bergan High School, where he earned first-team Class C-2 all-state honors from the Omaha World-Herald as a kicker this past season. He earned honorable mention all-state recognition from the Lincoln Journal-Star. Anderson helped lead Fremont Bergan to a 12-1 record and a runner-up finish in the Class C-2 state playoffs. He collected a game-high 13 tackles and had a 63-yard punt in the state championship game against Hastings St. Cecilia. Anderson averaged 37.5 yards per punt, converted 42 of 51 PAT attempts, and made three field goals with a long of 40 yards this past season. He had 54 solos and 21 assists for 75 total tackles and an interception for Fremont Bergan’s defensive unit. On offense he caught 10 passes for 255 yards and four touchdowns for an average of 25.5 yards per catch.
Jake Barkley, a 6-2, 225 lb. offensive lineman-linebacker from Hinton, Iowa. Barkley is a senior at Hinton High School, where he collected 24 solos and 12 assists for 36 total tackles, including five tackles for a loss, for a Hinton team that finished 9-2 and was a Class 1A state playoff participant. Barkley was two-for-two on field goal attempts with a long of 36 yards.
Chris Bennett, a 6-2, 240 lb. offensive lineman-defensive lineman from Bronson, Iowa. Bennett is a senior at Lawton-Bronson High School, where he collected 10 solos and 24 assists for 34 total tackles with two tackles for a loss and a fumble recovery this past season for the Eagles’ Class 1A state playoff team.
Aaron Brown, a 5-10, 170 lb. wide receiver from Walthill, Neb. Brown is a senior at Bancroft-Rosalie High School, where he earned first-team all-state honors from the Omaha World-Herald and honorable mention all-state recognition from the Lincoln Journal-Star this past season. He was a big play specialist for a Bancroft-Rosalie team that reached Nebraska’s Class D-1 semifinals with 20 pass receptions for 751 yards and 15 touchdowns for an average of 37.6 yards per catch. His defensive statistics included 50 tackles and a fumble recovery. Brown received honorable mention all-state recognition from both the Omaha World-Herald and the Lincoln Journal-Star as a junior.
Josh Buckingham-Weibel, a 6-3, 250 lb. offensive lineman from Omaha, Neb. Buckingham-Weibel is a senior at Omaha Christian Academy, where he collected 29 solos and 12 assists for 41 total tackles to go along with two fumble recoveries for a Class D-1 playoff team.
Jared Frazier, a 5-11, 180 lb. wide receiver from Sioux Falls, S.D. Frazier is a senior at Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School, where he helped lead the team to this past season’s Class 11AA semifinals. He caught 20 passes for 482 yards and five touchdowns for an average of 24.1 yards per catch. Frazier also averaged 35.0 yards as the team’s punter and had six kickoff returns for 183 yards for an average of 30.5 yards per return.
Logan Gibbs, a 6-0, 200 lb. linebacker-running back from Maxwell, Iowa. Gibbs is a senior at Collins-Maxwell/Baxter High School, where he led the team with 41 solos and 37 assists for 78 total tackles to go along with seven tackles for a loss and two fumble recoveries this past season. He was also the team’s leading rusher with 410 yards in 71 attempts for an average of 5.8 yards per carry with three touchdowns.
Jesse Glade, a 5-11, 170 lb. defensive back from Ocheyedan, Iowa. Glade is a senior at Sibley-Ocheyedan High School, where he earned fourth-team Sioux City Journal All-Northwest Iowa honors this past season. He had 24 solos and 41 assists for 65 total tackles to go along with two interceptions and two fumble recoveries for the Generals’ Class 1A state playoff team.
Austin Granatowicz, a 6-1, 215 lb. linebacker from Firth, Neb. Granatowicz is a senior at Norris High School, where he earned honorable mention Class B all-state recognition from the Omaha World-Herald and the Lincoln Journal-Star. He led Norris with 93 tackles and made the Sunland All-Area Team.
Devin Groenhagen, a 6-1, 230 lb. offensive lineman-defensive lineman from Le Mars, Iowa. Groenhagen is a senior at Le Mars Gehlen Catholic High School, where he was a third-team Des Moines Register Class A all-state defensive lineman this past season. He helped lead the Jays to an 11-2 record and the Class A semifinals. Groenhagen had 16 solos and 37 assists for 53 total tackles, two tackles for a loss, and an interception.
Jon Halvorson, a 5-11, 190 lb. running back from Sioux Falls, S.D. Halvorson is a senior at Sioux Falls Lincoln High School, where he was the leading rusher for the Class 11AA semifinalists. He rushed for 809 yards and 11 touchdowns in 144 attempts for an average of 5.6 yards per carry. Halvorson ran for a season’s high 214 yards against Brookings. He also caught 28 passes for 349 yards and two touchdowns for an average of 12.5 yards per catch. His defensive statistics included 25 tackles, two quarterback sacks, and two fumble recoveries.
Austin Hansen, a 6-0, 190 lb. linebacker from Glenwood, Iowa. Hansen is a senior at Fremont-Mills High School, where he helped lead the team to a 12-1 record and the state eight-player semifinals this past season. He collected 23 solos and 72 assists for 95 total tackles, including a tackle for a loss, to go along with five interceptions and a fumble recovery. Hansen returned 19 punts for 347 yards and three touchdowns for an average of 18.3 yards per return and rushed for 157 yards and three touchdowns in 39 attempts for an average of 4.0 yards per carry.
Justin Henderson, a 5-11, 215 lb. offensive lineman-linebacker from Crescent, Iowa. Henderson is a senior at Underwood High School, where he had 19 solos and a team-high 42 assists and 61 total tackles for the school’s Class 1A state playoff team. He had one tackle for a loss and four pass receptions for 56 yards and two touchdowns.
Brandon Hoefer, a 6-2, 215 lb. linebacker from Waverly, Iowa. Hoefer is a senior at Waverly-Shell Rock High School, where he was the leading tackler for a team that finished 9-2 and was a Class 3A state playoff participant. He collected a team-high 75 solos and 60 assists for 135 total tackles, including a tackle for a loss, to go along with one interception and two fumble recoveries.
Caleb Kluender, a 6-1, 215 lb. quarterback from Grand Island, Neb. Kluender is a senior at Grand Island Central Catholic High School, where he earned honorable mention all-state honors from the Omaha World-Herald and helped lead Grand Island Central Catholic to the Class C-1 quarterfinals this past season. He passed for 1,199 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed for 485 yards and seven touchdowns in 113 attempts for an average of 4.3 yards per carry.
Zach Maxey, a 6-4, 215 lb. tight end-defensive lineman-kicker from Sioux City, Iowa. Maxey is a senior at Sioux City Bishop Heelan Catholic High School, where he was a standout performer for a Crusader team that finished 12-2 and was the Class 3A state runner-up. He earned third-team INA all-state honors as a kicker in addition to first-team All-Northwest Iowa and All-Metro honors from the Sioux City Journal. Maxey made five of eight field goal attempts with a long of 42 yards and converted 63 of 70 PATs this past season. He had 16 solos and 17 assists for 33 total tackles, including 10 tackles for a loss.
Maxey received third-team Sioux City Journal All-Northwest Iowa honors as a junior when he made 56 of 58 PATs and four of eight field goal attempts with a long of 38 yards.
Ben McCord, a 6-1, 190 lb. defensive back from Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. McCord is a senior at Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School, where he had 16 tackles and four tackles for a loss this past season for the Warriors Class 3A state playoff team.
Matt Nelson, a 5-10, 180 lb. running back from Salem, S.D. Nelson is a senior at McCook Central-Montrose High School, where he collected a school-record 163 tackles during his career. He was a first-team Class 11B all-state linebacker this past season after he led his team with 85 tackles to go along with nine tackles for a loss and three quarterback sacks. Nelson also led McCook Central-Montrose in rushing with 633 yards and an average of 6.3 yards per carry.
Kyle Nikkel, a 6-6, 220 lb. quarterback from Pella, Iowa. Nikkel is a senior at Pella Christian High School, where he received second-team all-state honors from both the INA and the Des Moines Register after he helped lead Pella Christian to a 9-2 record and the Class 2A state playoffs. Nikkel completed 112 of 184 pass attempts (60.9 percent) for 1,901 yards and 21 touchdowns. He threw only four interceptions.
Christian Nohr, a 6-2, 190 lb. quarterback from Crofton, Neb. Nohr is a senior at Crofton High School, where he was a three-year starter and quarterbacked the school to a 10-1 record and the Class C-2 quarterfinals this past season. Nohr earned first-team all-state honors as a defensive back from the Lincoln Journal-Star and received honorable mention all-state recognition from the Omaha World-Herald. He passed for 1,040 yards as a senior for the second highest single-season total in Crofton history and threw for a school-record 2,775 yards during his career.
Dillon Robinson, a 5-11, 175 lb. running back-defensive back from Underwood, Iowa. Robinson is a senior at Underwood High School, where he rushed for 1,584 yards and 20 touchdowns in 181 attempts for an average of 8.8 yards per carry this past season. He collected a team-high 26 solo tackles on defense to go along with 17 assists, 43 total tackles, three interceptions, and a fumble recovery. Robinson was also Underwood’s top special team performer. He averaged 35.8 yards as the team’s punter, returned 10 kickoffs for 423 yards for an average of 42.3 yards per return with three touchdowns, and had eight punt returns for 146 yards for an average of 18.3 yards per return.
Luke Schauer, a 6-3, 245 lb. offensive lineman-defensive lineman from Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. Schauer is a senior at Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School, where he earned first-team Sioux City Journal All-Northwest Iowa honors as an offensive lineman this past season. His defensive statistics included 27 tackles and three tackles for a loss.
Nathan Schulz, a 6-0, 195 lb. running back from Fort Calhoun, Neb. Schulz earned honorable mention Class C-1 all-state honors from both the Omaha World-Herald and the Lincoln Journal-Star following a senior season where he was limited to six games due to an injury. He rushed for 690 yards and nine touchdowns and tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns in a game against Arlington.
Zach Sexton, a 6-0, 180 lb. running back-linebacker from McCook Lake, S.D. Sexton is a senior at Dakota Valley High School, where he earned first-team Class 11AA all-state honors as a special teams player from the South Dakota Football Coaches Association and Sioux City Journal All-Metro honors this past season. He had 10 kickoff returns for 280 yards for an average of 28.0 yards per return with one touchdown as a senior and returned three kickoffs for touchdowns during his career. Sexton rushed for 943 yards and eight touchdowns in 131 attempts for an average of 7.2 yards per carry during the 2010 season. His defensive statistics included 56 tackles, five quarterback sacks, and an interception.
Sam Shelton, a 5-11, 200 lb. linebacker from Sioux Falls, S.D. Shelton is a senior at Sioux Falls Lincoln High School where he was the team’s leading tackler with 112 stops this past season to go along with an interception and fumble recovery. He had a double figure tackle total in seven of Lincoln’s 12 games, including a season’s high 15 stops against Rapid City Central High School.
Dustin Skow, a 6-1, 195 lb. running back from Humboldt, Iowa. Skow is a senior at Humboldt High School, where he rushed for 607 yards and six touchdowns in 115 attempts for an average of 5.3 yards per carry. His defensive statistics included 41 solos and 12 assists for 53 total tackles, two tackles for a loss, and an interception.
Joe Tarpey, a 6-3, 260 lb. offensive lineman-defensive lineman and Jon Tarpey, a 6-0, 200 lb. linebacker from Clive, Iowa. The Tarpey twins are seniors at West Des Moines Valley High School and were members of the school’s Class 4A state playoff team.
Sam Tvedt, a 5-10, 165 lb. running back-defensive back from Oskaloosa, Iowa. Tvedt is a senior at Pella Christian High School, where he was an INA first-team Class 2A all-state defensive back this past season. He had 33 solos and 26 assists for 59 total tackles, including three tackles for a loss, to go along with four interceptions and a fumble recovery. Tvedt rushed for 477 yards and nine touchdowns in 63 attempts for an average of 7.6 yards per carry and caught 25 passes for 312 yards and four touchdowns for an average of 12.5 yards per catch. He was Pella Christian’s top kick return specialist with 14 kickoff returns for 406 yards for an average of 29.0 yards per return with a touchdown and 18 punt returns for 320 yards for an average of 17.8 yards per return with a touchdown.
Tvedt ranked among Iowa’s prep leaders with eight interceptions as a junior en route to second-team Class 1A all-state honors from the Des Moines Register and third-team all-state laurels from the INA. Aside from his eight pass thefts, Tvedt also had 41 solos and 12 assists for 53 total tackles, including two tackles for a loss.
Shane Wright, a 5-10, 190 lb. linebacker from Ralston, Neb. Wright is a senior at Papillion-LaVista High School, where he was the leading tackler for the school’s Class A state playoff team. Wright collected 64 solos and 51 assists for 115 total tackles to go along with a quarterback sack, an interception, a blocked kick, and a fumble recovery. He was also the team’s leading rusher with 528 yards and five touchdowns in 83 attempts for an average of 6.4 yards per carry. Wright also had 14 pass receptions for 108 yards.
Morningside posted a 10-2 record in 2010 and made its seventh consecutive post-season appearance in the NAIA National Championship Series, where the Mustangs have advanced to at least the quarterfinals each of the past six seasons. The Mustangs have a 68-16 record for a .810 winning percentage since the start of the 2004 season.
