Morningside’s men’s basketball season came to an end Tuesday with a 63-62 loss against Doane College in the opening round of the GPAC’s post-season tournament.
Doane’s Tyler Cyboron made two free throws with 10 seconds left to cap the scoring and complete a Tiger comeback that saw them outscore Morningside 12-2 down the stretch.
The Mustangs, who finished with a record of 12-18, appeared headed towards the GPAC Quarterfinals when they led 60-51 after Cory Gaston made a free throw with 4:13 left to play.
Morningside led 35-28 at the intermission following an opening 20 minutes where it shot 50 percent from the field. The Mustangs cooled off to 39.3 percent in the second half and also misfired on four of their six second half attempts from the free-throw line.
Mitch Carstens led the Mustangs with 14 points in his senior finale, but was Morningside’s only player in double figures. Gaston and Adam Palmer each added nine points, followed by Joel Haveman with eight.
Palmer grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to lead the Mustangs to a 34-27 advantage on the boards. Palmer, who also played in his senior finale, led the Mustangs in rebounding for the fourth game in a row and in seven of the last nine games of his career.
Mustang freshman Trent Miller came off the bench to deal a game-high five assists.
Doane will take an 8-20 record into Thursday’s GPAC Quarterfinals, where it will travel to Mitchell, S.D., to face a Dakota Wesleyan University team that is riding a 13-game winning streak.
