Erin Keitges, a senior from Allen, Neb.; and Monte Larsen, a sophomore from Neola, Iowa, earned NAIA All-America honors during Saturday’s championship finals at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in Marion, Ind.
Keitges placed sixth in the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:08.12, while Larsen placed sixth in the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.34 seconds for his fastest clocking of the season.
The top six finishers in each of the individual and relay events are awarded NAIA All-America status.
The Mustangs’ Kara Nelson, a junior from Cherokee, Iowa, was also a finalist in the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase. Nelson finished 11th in the event with a time of 11:36.55.
Morningside shattered its school record en route to an eighth place finish in the women’s 3200-meter relay during Friday’s action.
The Mustangs’ quartet of Breanna Mathes, a freshman from Cherokee, Iowa; Nicole Seier, a freshman from Lincoln, Neb.; Heather Hoefs, a junior from Valentine, Neb.; and Jessica Hudelson, a sophomore from Elk Point, S.D., ran a time of 9:12.75 in the championship final to shatter the previous Morningside standard of 9:17.35 then had run in Thursday’s prelims. Mathes opened the race with a 2:17 split, followed by splits of 2:18 by Seier, 2:20 by Hoefs, and 2:15 by Hudelson, this year’s Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) indoor and outdoor 800-meter champion.
Ryan Gass, a junior from Valentine, Neb., competed in Friday’s men’s high jump final and finished 17th with a height of 6-5.
Morningside men’s 3200-meter relay team finished seventh it its Thursday preliminary heat with a time of 7:51.57. The members of the relay team were Taylor Chapman, a freshman from Spencer, Iowa; Brian Gesink, a junior from Sioux Center, Iowa; Edwin Graf, a senior from Logan, Iowa; and Larsen. The Mustangs did not advance beyond the prelims.

Nine Morningside College athletes have been named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes in the sport of track & field.
The Mustangs’ scholar-athletes are:
Lisa Grosvenor, a junior from Newcastle, Neb., who has a 3.88 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with a major in American history and world history teaching.
Nick Grove, a junior from Grimes, Iowa, who has a 3.82 cumulative GPA with majors in religious studies and English.
Heather Hoefs, a junior from Valentine, Neb., who has a 3.96 cumulative GPA with majors in business administration and psychology counseling.
Erin Keitges, a senior from Allen, Neb., who has a 3.97 cumulative GPA with a major in elementary education.
Amy Kessler, a junior from Storm Lake, Iowa, who has a 3.59 cumulative GPA with majors in biology and chemistry.
Jenna Kral, a junior from Crete, Neb., who has a 3.62 cumulative GPA with majors in elementary education and special education.
Kara Nelson, a junior from Cherokee, Iowa, who has a 3.53 cumulative GPA with a major in psychology counseling.
Margo Stanforth, a senior from Platte, S.D., who has a 4.00 cumulative GPA with majors in mathematics and business administration.
RaeChael Zabokrtsky, a junior from Endicott, Neb., who has a 3.71 cumulative GPA with a major in biology.
Student-athletes must be of at least junior academic status and have a minimum GPA of 3.50 in order to be eligible for Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.

Morningside College athletes won four events, including a meet record breaking performance in one of them, at the 2010 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday in Hastings, Neb.
The Mustangs’ GPAC record breaking performance came in the men’s 3200-meter relay, where the quartet of Taylor Chapman, a freshman from Spencer, Iowa; Eddy Graf, a senior from Logan, Iowa; Brian Gesink, a junior from Sioux Center, Iowa; and Monte Larsen, a sophomore from Neola, Iowa, finished first with a time of 7:45.82 to take almost three seconds off the previous GPAC standard of 7:48.46 by Concordia University in 2009.
Larsen was also the champion in the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.95 seconds to remain undefeated in the event this season and anchored the Mustangs to a sixth place finish in the 1600-meter relay.
Kara Nelson, a junior from Cherokee, Iowa, and Jessica Hudelson, a sophomore from Elk Point, S.D., were the top two performers for the Mustang women.
Nelson was the champion in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:13.12 and the runner-up in the 5000-meters with a time of 18:03.37.

Hudelson won the 800-meters with a time of 2:18.77 to add to the GPAC 800-meter title she won during the indoor season. Aside from her victory in the 800-meters, Hudelson finished third in the 1500-meters with a time of 4:46.73 and anchored the Mustangs to a seventh place finish in the 1600-meter relay.
Erin Keitges, a senior from Allen, Neb., was also one of the top point scorers for the Mustang women. Keitges was the runner-up behind Nelson with a time of 11:19.88 in the 3000-meter steeplechase and finished fourth in the 5000-meters with a time of 18:12.37.
The Mustangs’ top relay performance in the women’s competition came in the 3200-meter event, where Sabrina Sieperda, a sophomore from Rock Rapids, Iowa; Jessica Clark, a sophomore from Mondamin, Iowa; McKenzie Reece, a freshman from Forest City, Iowa; and Heather Hoefs, a junior from Valentine, Nebraska, finished second with a time of 9:37.48.
Nicole Seier, a freshman from Lincoln, Neb., placed in two events with the sixth place time of 4:55.89 in the women’s 1500-meters and the eighth place time of 2:22.70 in the 800-meters.
Amber Woodford, a sophomore from Storm Lake, Iowa, finished third in the women’s 400-meters with a time of 59.01 seconds and teammate Allison Christy, a sophomore from Spencer, Iowa, finished seventh in 1:00.52. Woodford and Christy were joined by Breanna Mathes, a freshman from Cherokee, and Hudelson for the seventh place time of 4:02.03 in the 1600-meter relay.
Mathes added a fourth place effort in the individual events with a time of 2:21.22 in the 800-meters.
Gesink and Chapman finished fourth and fifth with times of 1:55.47 and 1:55.76, respectively, in the men’s 800-meters.
Morningside’s other individual event placewinners were Curtis Rife, a sophomore from Mondamin, Iowa, with a sixth place height of 6-5 in the men’s high jump; Deidre Hinkeldey, a sophomore from Alta, Iowa, with a sixth place time of 25.80 in the women’s 200-meters; and Tyler Heitman, a freshman from South Sioux City, Neb., with a seventh place distance of 22-5 1/4 in the men’s long jump.
The Mustangs finished sixth in the men’s 1600-meter relay with a time of 3:21.18 from John Harris, a freshman from Holstein, Iowa, Gesink, Chapman, and Larsen.
Morningside finished fifth in the final women’s team standings and eighth in the men’s team standings.
Results
Former Mustang athletes Meredith Davis and A.G. Kruger will be inducted into the Division II Track & Field Athlete Hall of Fame on May 26 in Charlotte, N.C., at the site of the 2010 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Garret Ehlers of Ida Grove, Iowa, the 2009 Class 2A cross country state champion, will enroll at Morningside College this fall and compete for the Mustangs announced Morningside cross country and track & field head coach Dave Nash.
Ehlers, a senior at Odebolt Arthur-Battle Creek Ida Grove (OA-BCIG) High School, was Iowa’s 2009 Class 2A cross country state champion with a time of 16:08 for a 14-second victory margin over runner-up Alec Baldwin of Spirit Lake. Ehlers, who was also a district champion with a time of 15:43, led OA-BCIG to a fourth place finish at the state meet.
He was a three-time state qualifier in cross country. Ehlers, who attended Battle Creek-Ida Grove prior to this year, finished sixth at the 1A state meet with a time of 16:28 as a junior and was 54th at the 1A meet with a time of 17:53 as a sophomore.
Ehlers was a top five finisher in two events at last year’s Class 1A track & field state meet with a third place time of 9:51.77 in the 3200-meters and a fifth place time of 4:34.51 in the 1600-meters.
Ehlers finished third in the boy’s 3200-meters with a time of 9:39.78 at this past weekend’s Sioux City Relays.

Morningside placed fifth in the women’s distance medley relay with a school-record time of 12:08.44 in Saturday’s action at the 2010 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships in Johnson City, Tenn.
The Mustangs’ quartet of Kara Nelson, a junior from Cherokee, Iowa; Deidre Hinkeldey, a sophomore from Alta, Iowa; Jessica Hudelson, a sophomore from Elk Point, S.D.; and Erin Keitges, a senior from Allen, Neb., took 13 seconds off their previous Morningside record time of 12:21.50 that they clocked in Thursday’s prelims. The four runners earned NAIA All-America honors with their fifth place finish.
Morningside placed fourth in the men’s 3200-meter relay with a school-record time of 7:45.59 in Friday's action. The Mustangs’ quartet of Brian Gesink, a junior from Sioux Center, Iowa; Edwin Graf, a senior from Logan, Iowa; Taylor Chapman, a freshman from Spencer, Iowa; and Monte Larsen, a sophomore from Neola, Iowa, earned NAIA All-America honors with their fourth place finish. They took almost three seconds off the previous Morningside record of 7:48.18, which they ran in Thursday’s prelims to rank fourth among the qualifiers for the finals.
Morningside shattered its school record in the women’s 3200-meter relay in Thursday’s prelims when Heather Hoefs, a junior from Valentine, Neb.; Breanna Mathes, a freshman from Cherokee, Iowa; Tabitha Shepherd, a freshman from Corning, Iowa; and Nicole Seier, a freshman from Lincoln, Neb., ran a 9:23.92 to beat the previous Mustang standard in the event by almost 10 seconds. Seier, Shepherd, Sabrina Sieperda, and Hoefs set the previous record of 9:33.10 earlier this season. The Mustangs finished 10th in the prelims and did not advance.
Hudelson broke her own Morningside record during Friday’s prelims of the women’s 600-meters. She ran a time of 1:37.58 to break the previous Mustang standard of 1:37.79 she ran earlier this season on Feb. 12 at the Dordt College Invitational. Hudelson finished 12th in the prelims and did not move on to the finals.
Larsen missed making the finals in the men’s 600-meters by one spot when he had the seventh fastest time in Friday’s prelims with a 1:21.31.
Tyler Heitman, a freshman from South Sioux City, Neb., finished eighth in Saturday’s men’s triple jump with a distance of 47-8.

Jessica Hudelson and Kara Nelson were individual champions at the 2010 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships held Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.
Hudelson, a sophomore from Elk Point, S.D., reigned in the women’s 800-meters with a time of 2:18.62.
Nelson, a junior from Cherokee, Iowa, triumphed in the women’s mile with a time of 5:12.44 to go along with a runner-up effort in the 3000-meters with a time of 10:21.74.
Morningside finished second in the women’s 3200-meter relay and broke the existing GPAC record of 9:33.63 in the process. The Mustangs’ quartet of Nicole Seier, a freshman from Lincoln, Neb.; Tabitha Shepherd, a freshman from Corning, Iowa; Sabrina Sieperda, a sophomore from Rock Rapids, Iowa; and Heather Hoefs, a junior from Valentine, Neb., clocked a time of 9:33.10 and were nudged at the finish by Concordia University with a 9:32.93. The Mustangs shattered their previous school record time of 9:39.44 set earlier this season.
Morningside had two second place finishers in the men’s competition. Tyler Heitman, a freshman from South Sioux City, Neb., was the runner-up in the triple jump with a distance of 46-6 1/4 to go along with a fifth place leap of 22-1/4 in the long jump. Brian Gesink, a junior from Sioux Center, Iowa, and Taylor Chapman, a freshman from Spencer, Iowa, gave the Mustangs a two-three finish in the 800-meters with times of 1:56.85 and 1:58.62, respectively.

Monte Larsen, a sophomore from Neola, Iowa, had a school-record breaking performance in the men’s 600-meters with a fourth place time of 1:21.10 to top the previous Morningside standard of 1:21.69 by Ryan Smith in 1998.
Erin Keitges and Diedre Hinkeldey each placed in two events. Keitges, a senior from Allen, Neb., finished third in the women’s’ 5000-meters and seventh in the 3000-meters with times of 18:07.03 and 10:32.61, respectively.
Hinkeldey, a sophomore from Alta, Iowa, was fourth in the women’s 400-meters with a time of 59.31 seconds and sixth in the 200-meters with a 26.33 clocking.
Morningside finished third in the women’s 1600-meter relay with a time of 4:02.51 from Margo Stanforth, a senior from Platte, Neb.; Amber Woodford, a sophomore from Storm Lake, Iowa; Hudelson, and Hinkeldey.
Stanforth finished fifth in the women’s 600-meters with a time of 1:41.03 leading a group of three Morningside place winners in the event. Sieperda finished seventh in 1:41.63 and McKenzie Reece, a freshman from Forest City, Iowa, was eighth in 1:43.42.
The Mustangs had two other place winners compliment Hudelson’s victory in the women’s 800-meters. Breanna Mathes, a freshman from Cherokee, Iowa, finished fourth with a time of 2:21.14 and Hoefs finished fifth with a time of 2:21.38.
Ryan Gass, a junior from Valentine, Neb., finished fourth in the men’s high jump with a height of 6-4 and Seier finished sixth in the women’s 1000-meters with a time of 3:06.46.
Morningside finished sixth in the men’s 3200-meter relay and eighth in the men’s 1600-meter relay with times of 8:01.33 and 3:26.28, respectively.
Morningside finished fifth in the women’s team standings and seventh in the men’s team standings.
