Kate Boeve, a 5-9 senior outside hitter from Doon, Iowa, and B.J. Rohlena, a 5-8 junior defensive specialist from Sioux City, have been named 2005 Daktronics NAIA Volleyball All-America Scholar-Athletes.


Boeve has a 3.65 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and is majoring in elementary education. She also received NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors as a junior.


Rohlena has a 3.84 cumulative GPA and is majoring in elementary education.


Boeve was the Mustangs’ top hitter this past season with 431 kills for an average of 3.48 per contest and ranked second on the team with 410 digs for an average of 3.31 digs per game. She led the Mustangs with 25 double figure kill performances and with 16 kill/dig double-doubles.


Rohlena had 559 digs for an average of 4.74 digs per game to break the former Morningside libero single-season records of 495 digs and 3.90 digs per game that she set the previous season. Aside from leading the Mustangs in digs, Rohlena also topped the team in passing percentage with 1,009 completions in 1,061 serve reception attempts for a passing percentage of .951.


Daktronics NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes must be of at least junior status and have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher.


Morningside posted a 19-15 record during the 2004 campaign for its fourth consecutive winning season.

Mustangs Announce Recruits

Morningside volleyball coach Aaron Nelson has announced the names of five high school recruits who will join the Mustangs for the 2006 season.

The recruits are:

Lindsay Hansen, a 5-8 outside hitter from Elkhorn, Neb. Hansen is a senior at Elkhorn High School, where she helped lead the team to a runner-up finish at this past season’s Class B state tournament and to a state championship in 2004. She earned honorable mention all-state, second-team all-area, and first-team All-Eastern Midlands Conference honors as a senior while helping lead Elkhorn to a 28-4 record. Hansen led the team with 325 digs for an average of 3.78 per game and ranked second on the team with 213 kills for an average of 2.48 per game. Hansen completed 304 of 314 serve attempts for 96.8 percent with 31 aces.

Jericho Johnson, a 5-3 defensive specialist-setter from Hastings, Neb. Johnson is a senior at Hastings St. Cecilia High School, where she earned second-team Class C-1 all-state honors as a setter from the Lincoln Journal-Star this past season. She also received honorable mention all-state laurels from the Omaha World-Herald and the Associated Press and was a first-team All-Centennial Conference selection. Johnson dealt 857 assists for an average of 10.2 assists per game during her senior campaign to help lead St. Cecilia to a 24-7 record and the semifinals of the Class 1A state tournament. Johnson also had 261 digs and 110 kills for averages of 3.10 digs and 1.31 kills per game and completed 399 of 410 serve attempts for 97.3 percent with 22 aces.

Brianna Paulsen, a 5-11 middle blocker from Sioux City East High School. Paulsen earned first-team all-district, first-team Missouri River Activities Conference (MRAC), and second-team Omaha World-Herald Class 4A/3A All-Western Iowa honors this past season after she slammed 367 kills and amassed 289 digs for averages of 3.43 kills and 2.70 digs per game. She also had 82 blocks for an average of 1.27 per contest and 40 ace serves.

Paulsen's 367 kills during the 2005 season was an East school record. She also set school records with 24 kills in a match and 813 kills in a career. Paulsen earned first-team all-district and second-team All-MRAC laurels as a junior.

Amanda Steinauer, a 5-7 setter from Seward High School of Seward, Neb. Steinauer dealt 472 assists for an average of 7.87 per game en route to first-team All-Central Conference and honorable mention Class B all-state honors this past season. Her statistics also included 142 digs for an average of 2.37 per game and 40 ace serves for an average of 0.67 per game.

Maggie Swenson, a 5-11 middle blocker from Ocheyedan, Iowa, who is a senior at Sibley-Ocheyedan High School. Swenson had 176 kills and 179 digs for averages of 2.44 kills and 2.48 digs per game last season. She also averaged 2.54 blocks per game and completed 90.6 percent of her serve attempts with 55 aces. Swenson earned second-team All-Siouxland Conference honors as a senior and received Sibley-Ocheyedan's Most Valuable Offensive Player Award as both a junior and senior.

Mustangs Post Fourth Straight Winning Season

Morningside College’s volleyball team posted a 19-15 record during the 2005 season for its fourth consecutive winning season following records of 23-13 in 2004, 24-17 in 2003, and 26-9 in 2002. The Mustangs finished in sixth place in the final Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) standings with a 9-7 league record.

Mustangs Break Single-Match Attacking Record
Morningside had a .506 hitting percentage with 51 kills and six errors in 89 attempts in a 3-0 victory against the University of Sioux Falls on Sept. 21 to break its former single-match record of .473 against Hannibal-LaGrange College in 2003.

Boeve Ties Single-Match Dig Record

Boeve tied a record first set by Steph Baddeley against the University of Nebraska-Kearney in 1996.

 

 

 

 

Rohlena Breaks Libero Dig Records
Photo of B.J. RohlenaB.J. Rohlena, a 5-8 junior defensive specialist from Sioux City, had 559 digs for an average of 4.74 digs per game to break the former Morningside libero single-season records of 495 digs and 3.90 digs per game that Rohlena set last season.


Rohlena had 37 digs in Morningside’s 3-2 victory against Briar Cliff University on Sept. 30 for a new Morningside single-match record by a libero. She broke her own former record of 32 digs against Midland Lutheran College last season.


Aside from leading the Mustangs in digs, Rohlena also topped the team in passing percentage with 1,009 completions in 1,061 serve reception attempts for a passing percentage of .951.

Martin Ranks Among All-Time Assist Leaders

Miranda Martin, a 5-8 sophomore setter from Casper, Wyo., dealt 689 assists during the 2005 season to raise her career total to 2,112 assists for the fourth highest career total in Morningside history. Martin has averaged 10.06 assists per game during her Morningside career.

 

 

 

 

Kotlik Leads Mustangs In Assists And Ace Serves
Katie Kotlik, a 5-8 sophomore setter from Bellevue, Neb., led the Mustangs with 772 assists to raise her career total to 844 assists for eighth place in Morningside history. Kotlik also topped the Mustangs with 49 ace serves and averaged 0.48 ace serves per game for the fifth highest single-season average in Morningside history.

Cheever Tops Team In Blocks
Photo of Cassie CheeverCassie Cheever, a 6-0 sophomore middle blocker from South Sioux City, Neb., had 91 block assists for the ninth highest single-season total in Morningside history. Cheever topped the Mustangs with an average of 0.90 blocks per game.


Cheever also led the Mustangs in hitting percentage with 378 kills and 120 errors in 909 attempts for a .284 hitting percentage.

Kate Boeve, a 5-9 senior outside hitter form Doon, Iowa, led the Mustangs with 431 kills for an average of 3.48 kills per game. She led the Mustangs with 25 double figure kill performances and had the Mustangs’ top single-match kill performance of the season when she slammed 30 kills in a 3-2 win against city rival Briar Cliff University on Sept. 30.


Aside from leading the team in kills, Boeve also ranked second on the team with 410 digs for an average of 3.31 digs per game. She led the team with 16 kill/dig double-doubles.

Tuttle Tops Mustangs In Serving Accuracy
Photo of Megan TuttleMegan Tuttle, a 5-8 sophomore defensive specialist from Sioux City, led the Mustangs in serving accuracy with 415 completions in 429 attempts for a completion rate of 96.7 percent. She ranked third on the team with 27 ace serves.

Boeve was the Mustangs’ top hitter this past season with 431 kills for an average of 3.48 per contest and ranked second on the team with 410 digs for an average of 3.31 digs per game. She led the Mustangs with 25 double figure kill performances and with 16 kill/dig double-doubles.


Boeve slammed 30 kills in the Mustangs’ 3-2 win at Briar Cliff University on Sept. 30 for the Mustangs’ top individual kill performance of the season.


Her statistics also included 22 ace serves, six solo blocks, and 31 block assists.

Boeve was the Mustangs’ top hitter this past season with 431 kills for an average of 3.48 per game and ranked second on the team with 410 digs for an average of 3.31 digs per contest. She led the Mustangs with 25 double figure kill performances and with 16 kill/dig double-doubles. Boeve slammed 30 kills in the Mustangs’ 3-2 win at Briar Cliff University on Sept. 30 for the Mustangs’ top individual kill performance of the season.


Her statistics also included 22 ace serves, six solo blocks, and 31 block assists.


Morningside’s middle blocker tandem of Cassie Cheever, a 6-0 sophomore from South Sioux City, Neb., and Cara DeStigter, a 5-11 freshman from Sioux City, were each named to the All-GPAC second-team. Cheever also received second-team All-GPAC honors last season.

Cheever had 20 solo blocks and 91 block assists to lead the Mustangs with an average of 0.90 blocks per game. Her 91 block assists is the ninth highest single-season total in Morningside history. Cheever pounded 378 kills for an average of 3.05 per game to go along with 12 ace serves and 48 digs. She had 22 double figure kill performances in 34 matches.


DeStiger was the Mustangs’ second leading hitter with 387 kills for an average of 3.12 per game. She also had 259 digs for a norm of 2.09 per game. DeStigter ranked second on the team with nine double-doubles and with 22 double figure kill performances. She also ranked second on the team with 40 ace serves and with an average of 0.65 blocks per game with 14 solos and 66 block assists.


Morningside’s B.J. Rohlena, a 5-8 junior libero from Sioux City, was named to the All-GPAC honorable mention list. Rohlena established Morningside libero records with 559 digs and an average of 4.74 digs per game to break the Mustangs’ former marks of 495 digs and 3.90 digs per game she set last season. Rohlena also set a Morningside libero record with a 37-dig performance in the Mustangs’ Sept. 30 win at Briar Cliff. She had 20 ace serves and led the Mustangs with a .951 reception percentage.


Morningside posted a 19-15 record during the 2005 season and finished sixth in the final GPAC standings with a 9-7 league record.

Boeve Earns Region And GPAC Honors

Photo of Kate BoeveKate Boeve, a 5-9 senior outside hitter from Doon, Iowa, has been named the NAIA Region III and the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week.


Boeve averaged 5.13 kills and 4.25 digs per game last week while leading the Mustangs to road victories against Briar Cliff University and Nebraska Wesleyan University.


She slammed a career-high 30 kills to go along with 19 digs in the Mustangs’ 30-27, 30-27, 28-30, 29-31, 15-13 victory against Briar Cliff on Sept. 30. The 30 kills were just three shy of the Morningside single-match record.


Boeve came back the next night with 11 kills and 15 digs in Morningside’s 30-13, 30-25, 30-27 triumph at Nebraska Wesleyan.


She has posted six consecutive kill/dig double-doubles and is the Mustangs’ season leader with 10 double-doubles and 18 double figure kill performances. Boeve is averaging a team-high 3.58 kills per game and ranks second on the team with an average of 3.12 digs per contest.


Morningside will take a 14-9 record into a 7:30 p.m. home match against Dakota Wesleyan University on Wednesday.

 

Rohlena Is GPAC Libero Of The Week

Photo of B.J. RohlenaB.J. Rohlena, a 5-8 junior from Sioux City, has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Libero of the Week.

Rohlena averaged 5.2 digs per game to help lead the Mustangs to a 3-2 record last week. She committed only one passing error in 155 attempts and contributed four ace serves.

She had a season's high 29 digs against Dakota State University at the Dordt College Invitational, then came back with 25 digs in the Mustangs' next match against Avila College, followed by a 21-dig performance against Iowa Wesleyan University.

She is the Mustangs' season's leader with an average of 4.32 digs per game and a passing percentage of .964.

Morningside will take a 12-9 record into a match at cross-town rival Briar Cliff University on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
