Kukuk Becomes Mustangs' All-Time Scoring Leader During 2011 Season

Maggie Kukuk, a forward from Sioux City, Iowa, became the all-time leading career scorer in Morningside College women’s soccer history during the 2011 season.

Kukuk, a 2009 Morningside graduate who used only three seasons of her athletic eligibility as an undergraduate, came back to play her final season this fall while she pursued a master of arts in teaching degree. She led the Mustangs with 21 goals and five assists for 47 points and provided the game winning goal in eight of the team’s 11 triumphs.


She became the all-time leading scorer in Morningside history with 170 career points to break the former Mustang standard of 164 points set by Janel Gillies from 2000-03. Kukuk, who was already the Mustangs’ all-time career leader in assists and game winning goals, raised her record totals to 44 assists and 26 game winning goals. She ranks second in Morningside history with 63 career goals.

Three Mustangs Named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes

Lydia Bienlien, Maggie Kukuk, and Kathryn Sorenson have been named 2011 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes in the sport of women’s soccer.


Student-athletes must be of at least junior academic status and have a minimum GPA of 3.50 in order to be eligible for Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.

Kukuk And Bienlien Are Academic All-Americans

Morningside College forward Maggie Kukuk and defender Lydia Bienlien have been named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America College Division Women’s Soccer Team as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).


Kukuk, a graduate student from Sioux City who is pursuing a master of arts in teaching degree, was named to the Academic All-America First Team, while Bienlien, a junior from Glenwood, Iowa, was named to the Academic All-America Second Team.

Kukuk Named To All-GPAC First-Team For Fourth Time

Maggie Kukuk, a forward for the Morningside College women’s soccer team, has been named to the 2011 All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women’s Soccer First-Team as selected by the league’s head coaches.


Kukuk, a graduate student from Sioux City, was the Mustangs’ leading scorer this season with team-high totals of 21 goals, five assists, and 47 points. She scored the game winning goal in eight of the Mustangs’ 11 victories.


Kukuk was named to the All-GPAC first-team for the fourth time in her career. She previously received first-team honors in 2006, 2007, and 2008 and was the GPAC’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2007.


She is the all-time leading scorer in Morningside history with 170 career points and also holds Mustang career records with 44 assists and 26 game winning goals. Kukuk is second in the Morningside record book with 63 career goals.

Mustangs Fall 4-1 In GPAC Title Match

Morningside’s women’s soccer season ended in the GPAC Post-Season Tournament Championship Match when the Mustangs dropped a 4-1 verdict against regular season GPAC champion Hastings College on Saturday in Hastings, Neb.

The 12th-ranked Broncos improved their record to 18-2-1 and will advance to the NAIA National Tournament, while Morningside closed the books on an 11-9-1 campaign. The underdog Mustangs, who entered the tournament as the No. 7 seed, had taken out No. 2 seed Doane College and No. 3 seed Midland University to advance to the title match.

Hastings scored two goals less than one minute apart to take an early 2-0 lead 16 minutes into the contest.

The Mustangs narrowed the difference to 2-1 at the 68-minute mark of the second half on a goal by Maggie Kukuk. The goal was set up by an assist from Brooke Martin.

Bienlien And Kukuk Named To Academic All-District Team

Morningside College’s Lydia Bienlien and Maggie Kukuk have been named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District V Women’s Soccer Team as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).


Both players will be placed on the national ballot for the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Women’s Soccer Team.


Bienlien, a junior defender from Glenwood, Iowa, has a 4.00 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with majors in biology and chemistry.


Kukuk, a graduate student from Sioux City, has a 3.59 GPA towards a master of arts in teaching degree.


Athletes must be of at least sophomore academic status, be a starter or significant reserve, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher to be eligible for Capital One Academic honors.

 

Mustangs Advance To GPAC Semifinals

Maggie Kukuk, a graduate student from Sioux City, became the all-time leading scorer in Morningside College women’s soccer history to help the Mustangs advance to the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Semifinals with a 3-2 win against Doane College in Thursday’s GPAC Post-Season Tournament Quarterfinal round match in Crete, Neb.


Kukuk tallied two goals and an assist to raise her career total to 165 points to break the former Morningside scoring record of 164 points set by Janel Gillies from 2000-03. Kukuk has scored 61 goals and a school-record 43 assists during her career. She is also the Mustangs’ all-time leader with 25 career game winning goals.


Morningside will take an 11-8-1 into next Tuesday’s GPAC Semifinal against Midland University in Fremont, Neb.

Reed Is GPAC Defensive Player Of The Week

Alyssa Reed, a sophomore goal keeper from Parker, Colo., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.


Reed did not allow a goal in the Mustangs’ two matches last week. She played the first 57 minutes and had one save in the Mustangs’ 6-0 victory against College of Saint Mary and had five saves in Morningside’s 0-0 double overtime tie with Missouri Valley College.


Reed received the GPAC Defensive Player of the Week award for the second time this season. She has a goals against average of 0.63 goals per game so far this season.


Morningside will take a 5-1-1 record into a Tuesday evening contest against Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa.
