Focus: A program for students with learning disabilities

Morningside College is phasing out its specialized program, known as “Focus,” for students with learning disabilities. Ever since the program started in the fall of 2001, the number of students who qualified for the program has never met the college’s expectations. Focus will continue to serve current Morningside students already in the program and new freshmen who are accepted into the program for the fall of 2008. No new students will be accepted into the program after the fall of 2008.

The program will continue to provide current Focus students with the following:

  • two-credit preparatory reading course and a two-credit preparatory writing course. The courses, Academic Reading and Basic Writing, prepare students for college-level writing and reading by strengthening skills in sentence construction, paragraph development, essay composition, reading comprehension, and critical reading.
  • four-credit preparatory math course. Intermediate Algebra prepares students for college-level quantitative reasoning classes by strengthening algebra skills.
  • subject specific tutoring.
  • advocacy for student's academic provisions. The Focus staff ensures the rights of each student in accordance with federal laws and regulations
  • WYNN software – an innovative computer program designed to assist and enhance reading, writing, and comprehension skills.
  • Dragon NaturallySpeaking software - speech recognition software provides students with dyslexia and other disabilities with the freedom to write and control their computer with their voices.
  • academic accommodations including but not limited to:

› testing accommodations, including extended time, oral examinations, reduced

distraction space, and use of computers for essays and short answers

          › books-on-tape

          › note takers

          › preferential seating.

  • academic progress reports provided throughout the semester. The learning disability specialists work closely with faculty to provide progress reports to students.
